Study Abroad FAQs
What are the benefits of studying abroad?
Spending time abroad will expose you to different viewpoints, cultures, languages and customs. It will help you see your own experience from a new perspective. Students typically return home with more independence and confidence. Studying abroad often helps students to develop skills such as flexibility, ability to deal with ambiguity, and other qualities that help you stand apart in future job and graduate school applications. Who can study abroad?
Most COF students can study abroad. Even if your major has strict course guidelines, consider a summer abroad or a COF Travel Course! Each program has different requirements for GPA, year in school, major, etc. Check with your study abroad advisor and academic advisor for help on planning out your time abroad.
Where can I go?
You can study almost anywhere for a summer, semester or academic year. As a student at a COF institution, you have hundreds of options available to you. COF students in the past have studied in popular destinations such as Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom. They have also traveled to Morocco, Turkey, Senegal, India and Japan. Speak with study abroad advisor and visit cof.studioabroad.com to research program options. Note: Your college may not allow you to travel to countries on the U.S. State Department Warning List. Check with your study abroad advisor for more information.
When can I study abroad?
It depends on your major and courses and home school requirements. Speak with your academic advisor about the best time to fit a semester abroad into your schedule.
How do I apply to study abroad?
After attending study abroad events and speaking with your study abroad advisor, you should create an application at cof.studioabroad.com. Note: For study abroad programs offered by providers, there are two parallel processes. You must apply through your home institution on cof.studioabroad.com and you must also apply directly through the program provider. StudioAbroad will help walk you through this process.
Is studying abroad more expensive than my normal college costs?
Not necessarily. Depending on the program you choose, costs may be higher, equal to, or even lower. Don’t let price be the only factor in determining your destination. Academic opportunities and cultural experiences are just as important! Visit the Scholarship Information page for opportunities to help fund your time abroad.
Can I use my financial aid when I study abroad?
Generally, federal and state financial aid can be used if the credits earned abroad will be applied towards your graduation. Meet with your financial aid advisor on your home campus to discuss your individual needs and financial aid package.
Do I need to speak a foreign language to study abroad?
No. There are English speaking countries and programs all over the world. However, knowing the local language will greatly enhance your experience and will make traveling and communicating in your host country much easier! Check the program listing for specific language requirements: cof.studioabroad.com
How many classes can I take while studying abroad? Will my credits transfer?
Students typically take four to five classes per semester. Speak with your academic advisor to determine how many classes you should take. There is a pre-approval process and you can discuss this with your study abroad and academic advisor.
When should I start planning for my time abroad?
Now! Leave yourself plenty of time to choose courses, apply for scholarships, and arrange for transportation and logistics. Applications are typically due by October 15 for spring semester and March 15 for fall and summer semesters. Plan at least one month before these deadlines, but more time is suggested.
